How to Insert Rubber Straps onto Danish Furniture

The enclosed straps are the correct length according to the Danish manufacturer of Fagas straps and will fit the slot-to-slot measurements that you specified.

In most instances, these are the same length straps that were originally installed on your furniture by the manufacturer. Straps are secured under tension and MUST BE STRETCHED SEVERAL INCHES when installed to give the proper tension for seating comfort. A three or four inch stretch is not too much.

Clip Style Fagas Straps:

Remove old straps. It might be necessary to pry the ends of your old straps up from the platform with a screwdriver. Position yourself to stand or kneel in front of and facing the chair. Place the new straps in the slot at the far side (rear) of the seat platform. Pull the straps one at a time toward you using your knees to support the chair and insert the clip closest to you in the slot at the front of the platform. Then move to the side of the chair and repeat this procedure.

Fagas Clip Style Strap Measurements

Strap # Strap Length Stretch
325 12 ¾” To 15 ¼”
385 15” 15 ½” – 16 ¾”
405 16” 17” – 18”
425 16 5/8” 18 ¼” – 19 ½”
465 18 3/8” 19 ¾” – 21”
500 19 5/8” 21 ¼” – 25”

Webbing Substituted for Loop Style Straps:

Measure the chair frame opening from side to side and add 10 inches (10”) to each length. Cut and remove the old straps. Cut doweling into sections so you have one piece for each individual length of webbing. Cut the new webbing into required lengths including the extra 10”. Insert webbing through the slot underneath the side of the platform, pull through 5”, place the cut dowel against the slot opening, pull the end of webbing up through the slot so it is underneath the long length of webbing. Pull towards yourself across the frame opening to ensure you have as much tension as possible to provide a comfortable seating platform. Then repeat locking in the webbing on this side closest to you.

Evans Furniture Company was incorporated in 1945 and was the largest independent Danish modern furniture in Los Angeles until it closed in 1968. The Evans family continued in the mail-order business refurbishing Dux and Selig furniture cushions and straps. Now that our cutter has retired, we no longer make covers and cushions. The Fagas straps are now being produced by their third Danish manufacturer but they continue to be made to the original specifications.
